The Ascension Church of Kalyazin was built in 1783. Originally it was a cemetery church, attached to the Nikolsky (Nikolayevsky) cathedral. It was built when the cemetery of the Nicholas parish was moved from the cathedral to a place farther from the city center. In the cemetery emigrated Kalyazin, merchants, clergy, intelligentsia, philistines rested. At first the church had one side-chapel of the Ascension of the Lord, later two more chapels - Tikhvinsky and Makary Kalyazinsky - were added to the temple. In the Tikhvinsky side-chapel was kept a particularly revered icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God - a list of the famous miraculous icon, and in Makarevsky - the icon of the Monk Makarios with a part of the relics. In the second half of the XIX century. between them a third throne appeared - in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God. At the church was built a stone bell tower of elegant architecture, the plan and arrangement of which belonged to local masters
