The brick church in the spirit of exemplary projects of the Russian-Byzantine style was built (1865-1881) by the architect A.P. Pirkovsky at the expense of the landowner V.M. Smidovich, to whom, for the difference in military operations in the Caucasus, the lands of the Tula province were granted, in particular those on which the village of Tyoploe was located later, also called Smidovka - by the name of the landowner. The fact that the village was located 65 versts from Tula and 35 versts from Krapivna and at the intersection of two large roads - Voronezh and Livenskaya, on a sandy elevated place played a role in the choice of the site for the construction. “According to archival documents, the construction of the church began on June 12, 1867,” says Archpriest Valentin Dudin. - The temple was erected with the greatest difficulties. Due to a lack of funds, only the central part of the temple was built in 10 years, and the construction of the refectory took 35 years. The main work was completed in 1874, then the temple was consecrated and began to function, and on August 8, 1903, the construction was completed in full ”. The walls inside the temple were painted with figures of angels, saints, episodes from biblical history (small fragments have been preserved). The clergy register of the church says: “In 1905, central heating was installed in the stone church; the building is surrounded by an iron fence on a stone foundation. In the state there was a priest, deacon, psalm-reader, who lived in houses built for them on the church estate ”. And the land at the temple was 36 tithes. The church also owned a gatehouse, on the site of which the baptismal house is located today.
