The building, which houses the National Library, was donated by a student of Kazan University Alexei Ushkov, the son of the owner of the Partnership of Chemical Plants, to his fiancee Zinaida Vysotskaya. The design of the house in the Empire and Baroque style was carried out by the architect Mufke in 1904-08. The house is located opposite the Kazan University complex, adjacent to Lobachevsky Square. In 1919, Ushkova’s house became the main building of the Central Provincial Library, which remains to this day. Now the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan with funds of 3.2 million copies of documents is the largest library in the Volga region. Thanks to the placement of the library in the building, the original layout and decoration were perfectly preserved, and readers now have the opportunity to admire the interiors of the halls. According to the tastes of the time, the rooms are made in different styles: an oriental-style staircase with carved dragons; Empire style ceremonial hall; Gothic-style dining room; green living room - in the rococo style; a former smoking room in the Moorish style and a winter garden, decorated as a grotto with sandstone walls with plants settled in clefts. All this magnificence is richly decorated with stucco molding, stained-glass windows, panels, cast and carved high reliefs, the floors are inlaid with different varieties of marble, even the door handles are unique and represent works of art.
