The Volzhsko-Kamsky nature reserve is located on the left bank of the Volga and consists of two separate areas: Raifsky and Saralovsky, 100 km apart from each other. The Raifsky site with an area of ​​3864 hectares is located 30 km west of Kazan, the Saralovsky area of ​​4170 hectares - 60 km south, at the mouth of the Kama. In addition to land, the Saralovsky area includes a 500-meter strip of the adjacent water area of ​​the Kuibyshev reservoir (1353 hectares). The reserve is interesting for its location (at the junction of natural zones - southern taiga and forest-steppe). The Volzhsko-Kamsky reserve is located in the Predkamye, the climate of which is characterized as moderate continental, with sharp temperature fluctuations and uneven precipitation. The territory of the reserve lies on the left-bank terraces of the Volga. Features of the geology, relief and hydrographic network of the reserve are associated with the history of the development of the Volga and Kama valleys. Relief Its central part is strongly lowered, has a dune-hilly character, with hollows and ancient gullies. The absolute marks at the bottom of river valleys and lake basins do not exceed 60-62 m, while in the north-west and southeast - 100-105 m. The northern and southern parts are crossed by an extensive network of ravines and gullies. In the relief of the Saralovsky area, there is a significant difference in absolute heights (50-140 m). It is subdivided into two parts: the mainland includes high terraces and a part of the first above-floodplain terrace, and the island - 10 islands. The relief of the islands is dune-hilly. Individual dunes rise up to 20 m above the reservoir level. The floodplain of the Volga and Kama has become a shallow part of the Kuibyshev reservoir. Only the manes in the floodplain rise 0.5-1 m above the water in the form of elongated low islands ranging in length from several tens to hundreds of meters.
