The first known free-standing bell tower was erected near the walls of the Monomakh Cathedral after the liberation of Smolensk from the Poles under Archbishop Filaret in 1656-1669. After the old cathedral was demolished and a new one was built in its place, the “Philaretite” bell tower between 1763-1772 was partially demolished and re-built. The new bell tower acquired features characteristic of the magnificent architecture of the capital's baroque. The facade for the bell tower adjoins a room for watches made in 1791 by Vasily Sokolov
