The monastery was built in honor of the second saint Rev. Abraham Smolensky. The style of the building is somewhat reminiscent of the Byzantine. It can be seen that the architect whom he designed was inspired by foreign style. In those days, as now, it was fashionable to bring architects and craftsmen from another country. Many are mistaken that the Russian style of this building, but if you think so, then many houses in Smolensk in this style would be built. But as we can see from the many surviving buildings, their style is completely different.

Interesting place. Impressive. I wasn’t inside. Outside everything is neat, nearby the territory is cleaned. The building is interesting in that in the upper part you can see the core from an ancient cannon. You need to look for it from the side of the fortress wall, it is clearly visible on the light wall. I advise you to walk here on foot, very pleasant places in the ancient part of our city.

The oldest Orthodox monastery of Smolensk. Named in honor of the second Smolensk St. Abraham of Smolensk. Abraham himself was canonized in the 17th century. The Savior Transfiguration Cathedral was erected in the middle of the 18th century. A beautiful example of Russian baroque architecture. A few years ago, the monastery's premises were returned to the Smolensk diocese. Now repair in them is still ongoing.

The place is especially interesting from the point of view of the events of 1812. Here you can see the cannonball stuck in the wall with the time of the war with Napoleon. Well, in general, the restored monastery is a beautiful place near the fortress wall.
