Sobor Preobrazheniya Gospodnya

This is all that remains of the once large monastery founded by Bishop Ignatius of Smolensk, between 1210 and 1219. The first abbot was Abraham Smolensky. It was originally called Bogoroditsky, since the first church in it was consecrated in honor of the Position of the Robe of the Most Holy Theotokos, and after the construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral in 1755 - the Transfiguration Avraamiev. During the construction of the Smolensk fortress, the monastery was included in its borders. During the capture of Smolensk by the Poles in 1611, he was devastated and converted to a Catholic Dominican college monastery operating until 1634, and in 1654 was revived as an Orthodox monastery. During the Patriotic War of 1812, the monastery was turned by the French into a military infirmary. In 1918 the monastery was closed; a concentration camp is located on its territory. At the end of 1920, the territory was transferred to the disposal of the Belarusian Military District and began to adapt to the residence of military personnel. During the Great Patriotic War, only the Vvedensky church, the Holy Gates and the fence were destroyed. And after the war, the remains of the monastery cemetery were eliminated. In 1972-1974, the Preobrazhensky Cathedral was restored, which since the late 1970s has been given over to the book depository of the regional library; the remaining premises of the monastery were occupied by medical institutions.
