... The first Ilyinsky temple was, as the documents say, “in the city,” that is, in the Kremlin, near the Spassky Monastery and was made of wood. In 1679 it was moved “to the posad in the old prison” behind the Glebovskie gates. To replace the wooden church in 1699-1700, the current church was built from bricks from the collapsed Assumption Cathedral. Later, a chapel was built in the name of the great martyr George. Around the church in 1870, a stone fence with a cast-iron lattice was laid. Ilyinsky temple has changed significantly after the reconstruction. Of the icons of the temple, the most revered was the icon of the Mother of God "Hodegetria-Smolenskaya". It was a large icon of ancient writing. According to legend, she once stood in a stone chapel at the city gates near the Gleb Tower. In 1618, the icon miraculously saved the city from enemy attacks. His Grace Simon (Lagov) transferred the holy icon to the Elias Church. Where this image is currently located is unknown. In the Elias Church, services were also conducted after the 1917 revolution. The temple became one of the few centers of church life in Ryazan. Many people flocked here for divine services. The temple was closed on November 18, 1929. It was recognized as suitable for grain filling. From that moment on, the temple was rebuilt more than once. Even in 1940, the authorities saw that "the facade was not repaired from the prayer building," and the necessary measures were taken urgently. For a long time the church housed the lecture hall of the Knowledge Society. Already in the 1990s, when Orthodox churches began to be handed over to the Church, the Ilyinsky temple was threatened with the fate of becoming a wedding palace.
