One of not so many attractions in Orel

1 star. Yes, it didn't seem to you. A lot of people asked me - "Dear, is this place worth our attention?" Duck, having visited this place in person, I can say with confidence that it is not worth your time. They write "oh, what a good cathedral", "oh, how good it is here", don't get fooled, in fact things are different. Nowadays, too much attention is paid to such things, which is a big mistake. All sorts of positive reviews, a constant message to ordinary people that religious places are something very important, beautiful, correct and necessary. Other people impose their opinions on people, who, in fact, only need money and power. If you are one of those who caved in under the opinion of others, then, of course, go to this cathedral. However, if you have your own opinion, you know your own worth, then never and for anything do not go to this cathedral, and even more so do not take your children there.

Some kind of middle place in the Eagle. This is where the city began. On the arrow Oka-Orlik, two hundred meters from the fence of the cathedral and a pebble lies a memorial. Here, according to legend, the working people scared the eagle from the nest, which flew around the border of the first fortress of the new city in 1566. From the Red Bridge you approach this solemn and uncommon place ... visual admiration! Oryol is perhaps the only city with the direct name of God's creature ... or maybe there are still cities in Russia with names from zoology? ... Let it be! I hope residents of Orlov do not suffer from this ... People go to church and I gave glory to our Lord Jesus Christ, bowed to Seraphim of Sarov. Grace!

The Epiphany Cathedral is the only surviving building of the arrow of the Oka and Orlik - the historical core of the city where the Oryol Fortress once stood. In 1636, by decree of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, the restoration of the city of Oryol, burned by the Lithuanians and Poles in the Time of Troubles three decades earlier, began. During this period, 1646, a wooden version of the Epiphany Church was built. Soon, the church of Saints Boris and Gleb was built nearby, and around the two churches there appeared the Epiphany Monastery, known by documents from 1665. After the fire of 1680, the monastery was moved a mile higher on the Oka River, to an elevated place. There, he initially retained the name of the Epiphany, but then was renamed the Assumption Monastery - subsequently the largest complex of temples in the city. The construction of the stone church was apparently completed before the decree of Peter I was issued in 1714, prohibiting stone construction throughout the country in connection with the construction of a new capital, St. Petersburg, where masons were recruited to work. In 1837, the building of the Epiphany Church was overhauled and expanded. The temple began to combine the features of baroque and classicism. In 1900, the bell tower at the temple was dismantled and no later than 1912 a new one was built. The bell tower was built in the then widespread neo-Russian style. Thus, the temple combined in its appearance the features of three main architectural styles in the history of Russian temple architecture. With the advent of Soviet power, the cathedral was not subject to total plunder. Moreover, in 1923 the Epiphany Cathedral was not included in the 17 temples of the Eagle, which were closed. But in 1937 an anti-religious museum was built here. As you know, services in most churches closed by the Communists were allowed by the occupation authorities in Germany. So the cathedral functioned until 1962. In 1964 the cathedral building was adapted for the city puppet theater. The head of the temple was dismantled, crosses were removed, the inner dome space was blocked off with a flat ceiling, and the internal painting of the 19th century was plastered. In 1994, the cathedral was returned to believers and for more than 20 years it has been restored.
