The church is like a church. But the score is lowered for not having a lot of space. Thick pillars and low ceiling in half of the temple

The church was built in 1410. It remained intact when the city was devastated by the Swedes and Lithuanians in 1611-1617, but by 1710 the temple began to gradually lose its former appearance and fell into desolation. In 1740, the church in the name of St. George the Victorious was completely dismantled. Only the foundation was left. The new holy abode acquired a completely different look. The building stood out for its huge windows, which were decorated with beautiful platbands and additional niches, as well as decorative design of the facade. In 1905 St. George's Church was completely reconstructed and restored. It was during this period that mosaics appeared on the floors, which gave them luxury and pomp, and the walls were decorated with wonderful paintings, which were executed in strict accordance with the sketches made by Vasnetsov. This is a kind of painting of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev. Unfortunately, not a single unique painting has survived. The only thing you have to enjoy from antiquity is a small patch on the church dome During the Soviet period, it was the only functioning temple in the city, with the exception of 1939-41 and 1943-45. During the war, the most valuable relics of the temple were lost, and in 1957 the bell tower was dismantled brick by brick. At the end of last year, the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography ordered the restoration work in the church, and in the near future there are plans not only for a complete overhaul of the church, but also for the restoration of the iconostasis and domes, as well as the construction of a 35-meter bell tower.

The ancient temple has 2 aisles. There are very old icons. It was the Dostoevsky family church, which lived nearby, 300 meters when they were in the country.

Quiet, calm place, the temple is very homely.

The Church of St. George - the monument is very ancient, the beginning of the 15th century. It was originally built by Archimandrite Varlaam in 1410. When describing the city of Staraya Russa in 1625, it is mentioned that this church remained intact when the city was ruined by the Swedes and Lithuanians, but from 1710 to 1740 it was in ruins. The temple was rebuilt with the preservation of the old foundations only in the middle of the 18th century, and on this the construction work in the temple was completely stopped. The church has the shape of a square, with the addition of the altar semicircle. The laying of its walls consists of burned oblong brick, wild stone and slab inside the temple. In the middle there are four square pillars supporting the dome of the whole church and the foundation of the dome. But not only time destroyed the ancient monument. In 1957, the 35-meter church bell tower was demolished in bricks. At the end of last year, the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography requested restoration work in the church, and in the near future, plans include not only a complete overhaul of the church, but also the restoration of the iconostasis and domes, as well as the construction of a 35-meter bell tower. At the moment, new crosses have been installed, excavations have been carried out at the site of the bell tower.
