Nice and recently renovated museum, it has a hall for expositions and another part dedicated to the history of the monastery
The museum hosts an exhibition dedicated to the Novgorod monasteries, those that were in Novgorod itself and in the suburbs. Their total figure is called 24, although, as far as I think, these are not all the monasteries that were in Novgorod and its suburbs. The exhibition is not very large and occupies only three rooms. The ticket price is also small (100 rubles), while an audio guide is provided (included in the ticket price).
It is curious that one of the three halls is entirely devoted to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary monastery on the Volotov field and the church of the Assumption on the Volotov field. I did not understand the reason for such attention to this particular monastery. Actually, from the monastery and before the war there was only one church (it was abolished in 1764 before any Bolsheviks), which was destroyed almost completely during the fighting, and almost all of the ancient frescoes died. In any case, what remains is perfect does not give an idea of what these murals were like. Yes, and the church itself in its current form is, in general, a remake, erected in 2009. Work on the restoration of frescoes is underway, but still they will not be able to recover what was lost.
On the ceiling in this room is an image of the fresco of the Savior the Almighty from the dome of the Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyin, made by Theophanes the Greek. Again, it is not entirely clear what is the relationship between this image and the monasteries, especially since the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior on Ilyin was never monastic. But there is an interesting exhibit in the exposition - a brick of 1352, discovered during excavations of the Church of the Assumption on the Volotov Field, with a drawing of a sailing-rowing vessel and three soldiers.
Another hall is dedicated, as it were, to the general history of the Novgorod monasteries and their abolition in 1917-1920.
And the third largest hall tells a little about each monastery, while paintings of contemporary Novgorod artists with views of monasteries are exhibited on the walls. Not all, but probably about ten. In principle, those who saw the remains of the monasteries themselves can easily recognize them from the paintings, except, maybe one or two cases. For example, I did not recognize the Church of the Savior on Nereditsa in the picture. Somehow very modern art.
In this third hall in the exhibition there is another interesting exhibit. This is a bronze bas-relief of Emperor Alexander the First. Before the war, he was in the collection of the Catherine Palace, but he was not evacuated, left and he disappeared. And in 2018, when conducting search operations at the site of hostilities in the vicinity of the village of Shumilov Bor, Demyansk district, he was apparently found somewhere in a swamp. These are the twists of fate. About how he got there, one can only speculate. I don’t know what connection this bas-relief has with Novgorod monasteries. Apparently, the organizers of the exhibition considered the find of this relic a manifestation of God's will, which, of course, links the bas-relief and the monasteries, and since the monasteries themselves had almost nothing left to exhibit, they decided to revive the exhibition in this way.
It takes more than an hour to listen to the entire audio guide, although the exhibition is small. We thoroughly listened and looked through everything that, apparently, in the aunts-inspectors caused some nervousness. Few people visit this museum, but we were the only ones at the exhibition (perhaps, in general, we were the only visitors for the whole day). The museum is open until 17.30, but at about 17 o’clock the museum’s employees are already “in pairs”, and since we were not going to leave, their impatience was evident. In general, it was fun.
The ten's manager is a favorite museum in Veliky Novgorod! Recommend!
Visited the exhibition of the Moscow school of watercolor. All the conditions are created in the halls in order to convey all the beauty of the paintings, a wonderful special refreshment.
From the street you need to look, as a landmark - a chapel above the entrance to the territory of the monastery (pictured). Not far from Detinets!
The exposition is very interestingly designed, but still in the process of creation. Children will love it.
The master class is paid separately, it is better to agree on it in advance. When we were there, the master had already left.
