The gate bell tower of the St. George Monastery, which has been preserved to this day, was laid in 1838 according to the project of the architect K. Rossi. Its construction was completed in 1841. The four-tiered bell tower of the St. George Monastery is the tallest building on its territory. It seems disproportionate and there is a legendary explanation for this. Allegedly, Nicholas I changed the design plan and removed the middle tier so that the structure did not exceed the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in Moscow. As a result, the height was 52 meters. The total number of bells was 32. In the 19th century, a clock was located on a bell tower in a round niche of the upper tier. For the chimes on the third tier there were 17 associated bells for clock ringing. On the lower tier were 15 church bells, among them the largest “Burning Cup” weighing 33.6 tons and the “Cross” 18.2 tons. The total weight of all the bells of the bell tower of the beginning of the 20th century was about 77 tons. To perform the festive ringing, at least 8 ringers were required, of which four rang two large bells. In the winter of 1932, a unique recording of Yuryevsky ringing was made, which is stored on three wax rollers in one of the St. Petersburg archives. This was the last sound of the Yuryev bells, because after a few days, by decision of the Soviet and party authorities, the bells, as not representing museum value, were sent for re-melting with the wording “for use for industrialization,” that is, they were destroyed. Now the bell tower has been restored. For 2011, it had 13 bells. The largest weighs 1380 kilograms. But the clock did not appear on the bell tower.

Belltower Gateway, 1841 Located in the north-western part of the monastery; in the east, the corps of the governor's cells, the treasurer, the sacristan and the economist are closely adjacent to it, in the west is the carriage body. Wooden bell tower existed in ancient times. The stone was built in the 17th century (exact time is unknown) and dismantled in 1758. The next bell tower was built in 1748 and was dismantled in the XIX century. However, all these buildings are not directly related to the monument. The existing bell tower was built in 1834-1841. on the site of the Holy North Gate. The author of the project is the famous architect K. Rossi. There were no rearrangements. The monument suffered during the Great Patriotic War. After the war, the bell tower was repaired. The architecture of the monument is a mixture of classicism and pseudo-Russian forms. The monument is of great importance for characterizing the activity of K. Rossi. Due to the high altitude the bell tower dominates not only in the building of the monastery, but also among the adjoining plains. .. The sound of the huge Jurevsky bells is so powerful that when it is heard, everyone in the city already knows that the service of God is going on in the Yurievsky monastery. The bells of the ears are heard especially loudly in the ears at night, when the long all-night vigil continues in the monastery ...

The Svyato-Yuriev Monastery itself is certainly far from flourishing, but we managed to listen to the bells on the gate belltower. It was wonderful.
