This magnificent church is overshadowed by the huge post-war buildings that housed the Communist Party offices. In 1635 when it was built by the wealthy merchant Grigory Nikitnikov, the church dominated the skyline with its striking architecture. Today it is closed to the public for restoration work. It has five green domes as well as many decorative elements such as colored bricks and stepped pediments. The richly decorated bell tower with its pointed pyramid roof, which communicates with the main building through a closed arcade, was added shortly after the temple was completed. The church is famous for its vibrant frescoes completed in 1656 shortly after Gregory Nikitnikov's death from plague. Scenes from the Gospels are included. The iconostasis is gold-plated and includes a magnificent image of the Virgin's Evangelism in the Nice Gate.

It is a pity that it is almost impossible to get to the upper temple with its unique murals. But it is not the fault of the temple that it is located on closed territory on Sundays.
