The house was built at the turn of the XVII-XVIII centuries (the exact date is unknown) and is considered the most ancient civil building in the Smolensk region. At first, at the time when Smolensk was part of the Commonwealth, the house served as the city archive ("Polish archive"). In 1785, the "Polish Archive" was converted into the forge of the Engineering House. Subsequently, the engineering house was destroyed, and the smithy was preserved.
