The initial arrangement of the square along the fortress wall began in 1911 on the eve of the centenary of the Patriotic War of 1812. The following year, in honor of the anniversary of the Battle of Borodino, a bronze bust of M.I. Kutuzov (sculptor M.I. Strakhovskaya) and the City Primary School in memory of 1812 were opened. The exterior of the building resembles a medieval castle. Here now is the Smolensk Museum during the Great Patriotic War. In 1913, the famous “Monument with Eagles” was opened (author - lieutenant colonel N. S. Shutsman, sculptor S. R. Nadolsky). In the square of memory of heroes along the fortress wall, from the time of the Second World War, burial of heroes began. Now it is the famous necropolis of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. In 1975, Sergeant Mikhail Yegorov, Hero of the Soviet Union Guard, was buried near the fortress wall, erected the Victory Banner over the Reichstag in 1945. Earlier, in 1968, he opened the eternal flame laid here. In 1987, busts of the commanders of the Patriotic War of 1812 were installed in the square in the memory of Heroes, in 2006 an alley of cities of heroes was opened.
