The Peter and Paul Church in Sestroretsk is the only one in Russia, and maybe in the world, dedicated to submariners. And this is no accident, because it was here that the first submarine was invented. In 1721, a local resident Yefim Nikonov showed Peter I a "secret vessel" - a kind of prototype submarine, he also came up with scuba gear two years earlier. The king really liked the invention, but it didn’t come to implementation. Yes, and the Cathedral of Peter and Paul was then completely different. The first - wooden was built in 1725, after 56 years it burned down. After him there were two more stone options, but the first also destroyed the fire, and the last - the Soviet government. Since the school occupied the old place, the new church of Peter and Paul was erected in 2009 on a different one. But it all started with the small chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker - the patron saint of sailors, which was erected in 2000 at the request of submariners. They wanted to perpetuate the place of creation and the first tests of the “Nikonov barrel” and laid the capsule with earth brought from 14 places of the Earth, where Russian submarines are, at the base of the chapel.
