If you have a little time and are interested in Leningrad's history then this museum is a must visit - just 10 mins from the Hermitage. The mansion itself is stunning and they have various exhibitions running, when we were there there was one about the early days of Leningrad and the communal apartments [some of which are still around] and although this was all in Russian it was still interesting. The rooms dedicated to the Siege, however, are harrowing. There is more English signage here or they can lend you the text to walk around with. But the horrors of the effects of starvation are hard to look at, but the later rooms are also inspirational - against the odds they somehow managed to hang on and fight until the Road of Life was opened across Lake Ladoga. Nevertheless, it was the worst siege in human history. I knew much of this period of the city's history from Lena Mukhina's diary but excerpts from Tanya Savicheva's diary, which was used as evidence at Nuremberg, are also held here.

You need to visit this museum if you want to meet true Peterburgzy. The people working here can tell you so much about history and they are incredibly friendly. Actually I have never ever met such enthusiastic museum workers in Russia or anywhere in the world. An excursion is very recommended (but I am not sure if there are any in English, please check before). The exposition is a little bit eclectic but very charming or touching (as in case with WW2).

The interiors that have survived are impressive. It's a pity that the restoration is not going on. Most of the ceilings are covered with suspended panels. An excellent exhibition of the master of iron casting Valery Galkin. Interesting Museum "Communal Apartment"

Today we walked around the city without a specific goal. We entered the mansion by accident, passing by. We were very satisfied. I liked all the expositions (besieged Leningrad, a communal apartment, an exhibition of the contemporary artist Dzovinar Arovna Bekaryan 👍). The state rooms delight with their splendor. Be sure to come back for a weekend excursion. We were very interested ...
