The birch house, designed by the Swiss artist and architect of the small courtyard, Francois Viollier, appeared in the mid-1780s and on the outside was a modest pile of birch firewood prepared for the long winter. It was a kind of joke, a pastoral whim of the eighteenth century, behind the simple facades of which luxury and splendor were hidden. Paintings and gilded stucco moldings, an abundance of mirrors gave the interior a special festivity. This contrast invariably amazed contemporaries, because for the guests who took a walk in the Gatchina Park, the small pavilion became an unexpected surprise. In 1796, under the direction of the architect Vincenzo Brenna, the monumental "Mask" portal was built, which hid the Birch House. In the second half of the 1790s, a stone gate appeared on the eastern border of the Palace Park, named Berezovy, since they were located not far from the Berezovy house.

This is such an unusual attraction! Moreover, such a fragile and small structure is a kind of dominant feature of this part of the park.

Most researchers believe that the pavilion was built at the initiative of Princess Maria Feodorovna as a gift to her husband Pavel Petrovich in the mid-1780s by the project of the architect François Violier. Externally, the building imitates a woodpile of birch firewood, not peeled from bark, and inside the building there is an exquisite hall with mirrors, sofas and paintings. The birch house, destroyed during the fascist occupation of Gatchina, was recreated in 1975.

A gorgeous little historical masterpiece. Outside it looks like a birch woodpile, but inside it is a luxury! Be sure to visit there.

The birch house is good. Good hodgepodge, steak, excellent strudel. The waiters are quick, polite, do not cross. Slightly distracted by tour groups that for some reason think that there is some kind of museum. I think these are the Chinese. Everywhere they see museums ...
