Historical cathedral. Ikon of St Petersburg
Great view
St. Isaac's Square is the main square of St. Petersburg.
The UNESCO organization confirmed the uniqueness of the architectural ensemble of the square, including it in the World Heritage List.
The square was officially named by the Decision of the "Commission on the St. Petersburg Building" in 1738. Mansions and palaces began to appear on the square in 1742.
Dreaming of turning St. Petersburg into the most delightful city in the world, Emperor Alexander I gathered under his patronage the most talented architects and civil engineers of his time.
Karl Ivanovich Rossi made very interesting proposals for the layout of the square and even developed two of his own plans in 1847. Some elements of them were brought to life by Montferand. He presented his own projects in 1820, 1825, 1844. And finally, the version of the arrangement of St. Isaac's Square, presented in 1855, was approved by Emperor Alexander II in 1856. Practically in this form, with changes and additions, its appearance still exists today.
St. Isaac's Square united into a single architectural ensemble completely different in style, purpose and time of construction of buildings: St. Isaac's Cathedral, St. Isaac's Square, Monument to Emperor Nicholas I, the Mariinsky Palace, two buildings of the Ministry of State Property, the building of the German Embassy, the Myatlevs' House, Kitner's Apartment House, the Mansion Zubov, Miller's Mansion, Horse Guards Manege, Lobanov-Rostovsky House, Shil's House, Angleterre and Astoria Hotel.
Breathtaking, such a beauty. A cozy square nearby, many shops and the scent of roses around.
In the city center, between the Neva and Moika rivers. Beautifully lit evening. The monument to Nicholas I stands impressively in the middle, and the Council of Isaac completes the majestic appearance of the square. If you are there during the white nights, go out at night, there are no people and you can enjoy the view without the crowds of tourists around.
