Grand (Samsonovsky) Canal and Peterhof Harbor The Grand, or Samsonovsky, canal cuts the entire territory of the Lower Park along its main compositional axis, connecting the Grand Cascade and the palace with the sea. The canal starts from the bucket and, passing through the park, continues, fenced by dams, far in the bay where the harbor is built. The construction of the canal was carried out simultaneously with the construction of the palace - from the summer of 1714. In the spring of 1716, over one and a half thousand people worked on the construction of the canal. Digging was extremely time-consuming. In the bucket in front of the grotto, underground keys were hammered, the water of which they with great difficulty scooped day and night with "cars and people." In the fall of 1716, the architect J.-B. Leblon suggested making the channel wider. Peter I approved this proposal, and by 1718 the canal was expanded, deepened, and the bucket was given a semicircular shape.
