Young Nikolai did not leave the church for days on end, carried away by prayer and books. This zeal is noticed by his uncle, Bishop Nikolai Patarsky, who eventually appointed his nephew a reader, and then elevated him to the priesthood and made him his assistant. The time of the service of St. Nicholas fell on a difficult period of persecution of the followers of Christ. Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian, and then Galerius at the end of 3 - the beginning of 4 centuries A.D. e. legalized the systematic persecution of Christians. Then Bishop Nicholas of Mira Lycia personally destroyed pagan temples and places of worship, actively developed Christian communities. Nikolai was from a wealthy family, and after the death of his parents he became the sole heir to the estate, but chose to become a benefactor. Thanks to his generosity, St. Nicholas in Western culture became known as Santa Claus. Once, Nikolai the Miracle Worker found out about a poor family in which the father of three daughters could not marry them due to lack of a dowry and almost decided to take a terrible step - to make money on their beauty. Then the archbishop secretly threw a bag of gold out the window of the house, which became the dowry for the eldest of the sisters. The same thing happened twice, and the last time the grateful father managed to track down the benefactor. According to legend, Nicholas accidentally fell into a stocking bag, which was hung out to dry by the fireplace - hence the Catholic tradition of putting gifts in socks.
