Church of St. John the Evangelist The old parish Orthodox Church of Sortavala, built in the 1780s in the Kirkkoniemi district, was demolished in 1877. In its place, a brick chapel of the Valaam Monastery was built, which, according to the project of Juhani Viiste, was transformed into the Church of St. John the Evangelist and tied to the central administrative building of the Greek Catholic parish in 1932. The church began to serve as the training church for seminary students and the home church of the archbishop. The Church of St. John the Evangelist was not affected by the air raids of the Winter War, and in March 1940 only altar items were taken out of it. During the Second World War, the Finns managed to repair the premises of the church, which served in the Soviet period as a tinsmith workshop.
