Why is there a monument to the Pernov regiment in Vyazma? The fact is that it was this regiment in the distant 1812 that was the first to enter the city, when the Great Army of Napoleon, which was defeated, retreated from the city. Then, in the battle with the French, 159 Pernovites died, and the surviving 230 people received awards for their courage and for defending their native land. In this regard, in October 1912, a monument to the Pernov Grenadier Regiment was unveiled on the Trade Square of Vyazma, not far from the building of the Mother of God, where the fierce battle of the Pernov Regiment with the French Guard was going on. It is noteworthy that the Pernov regiment itself arrived from Moscow in full force for the celebrations! The monument to the Pernovsky regiment was designed by sculptor Matveyev with funds raised by the soldiers of this regiment. Unfortunately, 6 years later the monument was destroyed, as it reminded of the military exploits of Tsarist Russia. It was possible to restore the monument only in 1962, to the 150th anniversary of the Patriotic War. As part of this event, it was also decided to rename Prigorodnaya Street in the city of Vyazma to Pernovsky Regka Street. The monument is a round red granite column on a high pedestal. At the top of the column sits a volumetric double-headed bronze eagle with imperial crowns on its heads. In the middle of the column there is a cube on which the following text is applied: "On October 22, 1912, the Pernov grenadiers, grateful to their ancestors to the heroes who gained military glory, high awards and wrote the best page of the exploits of Russian weapons in the battle near the city of Vyazma on October 22, 1812" ...
