Transfiguration Cathedral was built in 1506-1516. on the site of an ancient building of the XIII century, collapsed in the fire of 1501. Three-domed church, restored in 1957-1959. designed by E. Karavaeva, it is the oldest monument of stone architecture of Yaroslavl. In the course of the restoration, the church’s covering was restored, chapters with helmet-shaped domes on drums cut through narrow windows, galleries covering the temple from the north and west. Internal mural of the cathedral, made in 1563-1564 Moscow and Yaroslavl masters, twice as much: in the 1780s. and in 1814
Having visited this place fully imbued with spirituality and originality of our ancestors! 😗
A very extensive area on which there are many buildings with an interesting architectural plan. Expositions located under the roofs of these buildings, give a clear idea of the land of Yaroslavl and Old Russian as a whole!
I definitely recommend visiting children and adults, besides, the cost of tickets is pleasantly pleasing! 😉
Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral is the oldest building in Yaroslavl, which has survived to the present day. In the XVI century, it was one of two stone buildings in the city (the second is the Assumption Cathedral on Strelka), while the rest of the buildings were built of wood.
The Savior Cathedral, as we see it today, was built in 1515 or in 1516 on the foundation of the first cathedral, erected in the 13th century and by the beginning of the 16th century, which had already decayed and suffered from the city fire of 1501. It is not known whether the cathedral collapsed during a fire or was simply badly destroyed and it was dismantled - somehow the need arose for the construction of a new church.
The architectural outlines of the modern Savior Cathedral resemble the forms of the Annunciation and the Archangel Cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin. The reason is that the new temple was built by Moscow masters sent by Vasily III, the father of Ivan the Terrible.
The monastic authorities turned to Vasily III, because stone building required very large funds: they had to pay not only the purchase of stone, but also pay taxes - for its use, extraction, transportation to the construction site, and so on. Vasily III not only gave money for the construction of the cathedral, but also sent the artel of craftsmen, since no one in Yaroslavl could build stone.
There is reason to believe that the authorship of the cathedral belongs to the Italian architect (possibly Venetian) - one of those who at that time was finishing work on the construction of the Moscow Kremlin. Most likely, it was not the master of the "first row", but certainly one of the best for that time.
... The cathedral was built in the period from 1506-1516. It is believed that he stands on the site of the eponymous cathedral, founded by Prince Constantine in 1216, which collapsed in the fire of 1501, when Yaroslavl burned almost to the ground.
So, after a fire in front of the monastery authorities raised the question of the construction of a new stone church. On its own it was impossible, as the stone building in the city is not conducted at all and masters with appropriate skills, it was not. And then I came to the aid of Moscow. The Moscow authorities favored the monastery and at the behest of Vasily III an artel of masters was sent to Yaroslavl. Most likely, the head of this gang Italian architect ....
