It is a house of prayer for Muslim believers. In the Muslim mosque, people pray in public and hear sermons on Friday - the holy day for Muslims. During prayer, the worshipers turn towards the city of Mecca, the holiest city for Islam. The mosque is also used for various community needs. Most mosques have a dome and a spire called a "minaret". The mosque usually has almost no furniture, other than the manbar, a pulpit. It has no paintings or statues because of the Muslim religion's ban on depicting figures. In most mosques, however, the walls of the mosque are decorated with geometric ornaments and inscriptions in Arabic. The first mosque was the house of the Prophet Muhammad in the country, a city north of Mecca to which Muhammad's followers moved in 622. The restoration of Muhammad's house reveals a large courtyard that contained a relatively small house. According to Muslim tradition, after many believers complained about the great heat in the middle of the day, Muhammad arranged for a row of palm trees to be planted on one side of the courtyard and a roof of palm branches formed between the row of trees and the outer wall, creating a shaded prayer area. Muhammad himself stood at one end of this arched passage to preach his teaching to his hearers.
