Bosque de Cinquera is forest which has grown only since the commencement of the El Salvadoran Civil War of 1975 to 1995. Farming in the area ceased at the beginning of hostilities. Local guerrillas established a hospital here. The remains of a "Vietnamese Kitchen" can be seen, where smoke from cooking fires for the hospital was routed underground and diffused to protect against aerial bombardment. Biologists are studying the reestablishment of the forest ecosystem. The site is used for historical education. There are several miles of trails which are well made and marked. It is possible to arrange for a guide to explain what happened here.
