An interesting venue that I stumbled across whilst exploring Kairouan. My understanding is that it’s a museum to an eccentric figure in the city’s history who would carve oversize monuments and figures. Friendly guide shows you around but without speaking French or Arabic, there was only a limited comprehension of what was being conveyed
Museum of Sidi Omar Abbada in Kairouan
There is no doubt that it is one of the strangest places in Kairouan, but in Tunisia as a whole. This museum was built in a corner built in 1872, which houses the shrine of a personality no less strange than that which is called with some appreciation Sidi Omar Abbada.
As for the building, it is a vast architectural group surmounted by seven ribbed domes according to a typical pattern, and there is no doubt in Kairouan ten centuries ago, but the number of domes was never so high, and this gives the teacher a unique character that is not without pomp and dignity.
As for the content, it consists of several items that belonged to the property of Sidi Omar Abbad, and several artifacts he made himself and collected in a large hall of the building. And the guide states that "these artefacts are absolutely not suitable for any use because they are very huge ... like those giant anchors that were said to be intended to protect Kairouan and keep them attached to the country, and such massive swords and very heavy bronzes and that huge pipe ... all of these The pieces have deep inscriptions that tell the story of their owner.
This person is also unique: he was "eccentric, mysterious, characterized by the strength of his strange personality, the stiffness of his faith, and his excessive sense of his ability and greatness ... and he was always sacred and at the same time frightened of the side."
Sidi Omar Abbada was a mourner with the rank of "teacher", and his mystical and fierce enthusiasm was bewildering during that period of inactivity and degradation that the country witnessed before the French colonial campaign (April-May 1881). He was able to express his fears and hallucinations with his strange and supernatural articles.
The theme of the museum as well as its context is very interesting and original, as well the building, the exhibits as well as the history of their owners Sidi Amor Abbada. I highly recommend you visit this place.
