The Esperance Sportif de Tunis will soon be celebrating its centenary and will celebrate with pomp a century of sporting achievements.
Often, one wonders where the name of the club and the choice of the name "Esperance" came from. Several versions exist on this subject. Some will tell you about the desire to appoint the Raja de Tunis team in order to give the team an Arab identity. Others, more numerous, will mention the fact that the first meetings of what will become the first committee of the The team were in a café called “Café de l'Esperance”.
This version is the most plausible especially since it was mentioned by two of the founders of the ES, namely Zouaoui and Ben Osman.
However, the location of this cafe, which is said to be located in Bab Bhar, poses a problem. Indeed, why would a club whose seat was in Bab Souika come to organize its meetings in Bab Bhar?
That said, it is quite possible that things turned out this way because the founders were not working at Bab Souika and could have chosen to meet in other places. On the other hand, contacts with the league at the time could also justify this venue. We can also think that the owner of this café offered his hospitality to the future founders of the team.
The mystery persists and our readers will in turn be able to contribute their knowledge to the Mill of Hope. There remains the precise location of this cafe which remains difficult to pin down. We will come back to that.
It should also be noted and the fact deserves to be noted that at one point in its history, in the mid-1940s, Esperance had a room located in rue des Maltais (rue Mongi Slim, nowadays). This room was located on the first floor of a building that was located between Old Post Street and Malta Srira Street.
Finally, there was another Café de l'Esperance which was located in the heart of Bab Souika. This cafe was located near the post office and included three Esperance players in its squad.
Indeed, the goalkeeper Laroussi Houta held the cash there while the twirling Abdelaziz Ben Tifour was a waiter. At the counter, left-back Mouldi Nana was in charge. Long gone, this café was located near the door of Souk Sidi Mahrez, the Daoud pharmacy and the Belhadj restaurant.
It had the Café de l'Esperance sign on its storefront. As for the founders' café, the one that would have motivated the name of the team, it is currently nowhere to be found. But has it ever existed?
