The Catacombs and their 240 underground galleries extend over 5 km of labyrinths. There are three of them, all discovered towards the end of the last century: the catacombs of the Good Shepherd, those of Hermes and those of Sévère. The Sousse Catacombs were dug by Christians towards the end of the first century to bury their dead. They are better preserved than the Catacombs of Rome. They were also the refuge of the first Christians victims, as everywhere else in the Roman Empire, of persecution. Considered to be the most important in the ancient world after those of Rome, the catacombs of Sousse are divided into two parts: those of the "Good Shepherd" which date from the 3rd century and house around 6000 tombs and those of Hermes which date from the same period but house 2,200 graves.
