The municipality of Sfax was established in 1884.
The Sfax Municipal Palace is a wonderful masterpiece of the most beautiful and oldest palaces in North Africa. Its construction began in late 1905 and was completed in 1906. It has a modern Arab style that combines Arab and Western architecture. Designed by French architect Raphael Gay.
The first municipal council was convened on April 24, 1906.

The palace of the municipality of Sfax is one of the most beautiful palaces and the most beautiful and oldest in North Africa. It has maintained its elegance for more than 100 years, making it truly the city's masterpiece and jewel.
Its construction was announced and the contractors in the newspapers were invited to build it on 30 June 1904. The palace contains many spacious halls for meetings and the basement was dedicated to the archaeological museum and displays the artifacts and mosaic paintings of civilizations before Islam and the upper floor where the office of the mayor and the General Secretary and the offices of many staff.
The first municipal council was convened on 24 April 1906 to discuss the problems of enlightenment and water in the city. If we know that the establishment of the municipality of Sfax was in 1884, the headquarters of the meetings of the municipal council was a house in Malta's approach to the property of a French person named Seychelles.
