The Great Mosque of Sfax, built in 849 AD, is located in the heart of the ancient city and is surrounded by approaches from every side and is located in a depression from the ground, bounded to the north by the approach of the Aghlabids and to the south the approach of Ibn Sina and to the east the approach of the Great Mosque and to the west the approach of the jewelers and adjacent to some markets of the ancient city Such as the Friday Market from the east side, the Al-Rab'a market, Al-Kamour market from the northern side, and Balaj market from the western side. Due to the large number of restoration and expansion works he witnessed, the features of his original core have disappeared and have become virtual. Its eastern façade with rich decorations is characterized by the presence of several doors and windows topped in the form of horseshoe with three spikes, in addition to several niches hollowed in the upper places. The mosque is currently accessed by means of an open side door in the northern facade, and it leads to a small courtyard surrounded by four arcades with transcending semicircular arches resting on pillars. The corridor leading to the prayer hall is preceded by a prominent door, covered by a dome with corners, which rests directly on the square base. To the right of this section at the bottom, there is an embossed skylight that plays the role of a mihrab, and it is a beautifully decorated sky heaven with verses written on it by Ali Ghurab’s hair who died in 1769.
