The tower was established in 1434 by Abu Abdullah Muhammad al-Hafsi. It has ancient walls and is a Byzantine landmark, and it was restored and repaired in 1663 and also in the nineteenth century, but in 1943 some parts of it were damaged during World War II. It has a large space that is currently being used for exhibitions, while the old theater is being used for major demonstrations and festival performances, such as the Gafsa International Festival, after many maintenance and preparation works have been carried out on it on more than one occasion.
