I stayed one night here and rather enjoyed it. The room was spacious and nice for the price. My one big complaint was that they used a very strong-smelling cleaning solution in the room, which never properly left because there is really no circulation. If you've a sensitive nose--as I do--perhaps ask for a room which hasn't been used in a couple days. Otherwise, for the price and nostalgia trip, it is well worth it.
The breakfast is the basic Tunisian norm: bread with jam and butter, and coffee and tea.
The staff was nice enough, and spoke some English (enough to communicate). They all seemed to speak French fairly well, too, so I tried that when English failed. I didn't give Tmaziɣṯ much of a try, but it was cool hearing people speak it!
Overall, if you are particularly interested in either troglodyte dwellings or Star Wars, I can most definitely recommend staying here.
Matmata, Tunisia is where you'll find Hotel Sidi Idriss set in a rugged, arid environment that was deemed the perfect location for the filming of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The hotel was recently featured in a BBC2 TV programme "Mediterranean with Simon Reeve."
Our stay at the Sidi Driss was exactly what we wanted. It is a Berber Cave dwelling which has been a hotel since before the Star Wars films used it for the Lars Homestead. We went as part of a Star Wars tour and the locals are very proud of that aspect of the hotel.
The room was a cave, but the beds were comfortable and the room was very pleasant to sleep in. For Western guests, a thing to note, there are no seats on the toilets, toilet paper is lacking, and bring your own towel if you wish to shower. This is rough living in a super amazing location and well worth it.
The bar serves a small selection of spirits and a single beer, but it is Becks so all is good there. It has a restaurant which serves Berber food, which is 100% amazing. They use spices which are excellent and flavorful.
I highly recommend this as a place to go when you visit Tunisia!
The Hôtel Sidi Driss in Matmatat-Al-Qadimal, Tunisia was used as the Lars homestead (Luke Skywalker’s childhood home) in A New Hope. The hotel consists of five pits, four of them reserved for lodging and sleeping, the fifth dubbed the “Star Wars pit.” Guests can dine in the Lars family dining room, now the hotel’s restaurant. The set dressings were removed after filming in 1976, but returned in the year 2000 in order to film scenes for Attack of the Clones. Ever since, the decorations have remained. Fittingly, it's more commonly known as the "Star Wars hotel."
Great place. Quite unique experience and fair pricing. Food could be better but was okay. Better bring a silk sleeping bag, cleanliness could be improved.
