Like the rest of Tunisia, Djerba was inhabited by the indigenous Libyques who live there until today. Subsequently, the Phoenicians occupied it and called it Meninx in reference to the murex they raised from its funds to extract the purple. The Phoenicians thus founded an important trading post in Djerba. The traces of the Romans are marked by a 6 km long causeway called El Kantara. This causeway connects the south-east of the island to the Zarzis peninsula until today. By entering Djerba through this dike, we find ourselves near the region of Guellala. This village is inhabited by the Berbers who keep their language and their culture there. It is the pottery capital of Djerba, if not all of Tunisia.
