The Makthar Museum is a small Tunisian museum, inaugurated in 1967, located on the archaeological site of Makthar, the ancient Mactaris. Initially a simple site museum using a building constructed to make a café on the site of a marabout, it consists of three rooms, certain elements of which are exposed outside in a lapidary garden. In addition, just behind the museum, are the remains of a basilica. The collection, which mainly consists of elements found during excavations carried out on the site or in its immediate surroundings, is representative of the history of Tunisia from the Punico-Numidian period until the end of Antiquity, with traces of Christianity in Byzantine times.

The establishment of the city of Mekther dates back to the 200-year-old Nodid era, where it was named M'Ktrym, which flourished in all respects during the reign of King Massinissan and his grandsons. It became an important city in the Numidian era and was known for its height during the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, in which many monuments were built. The city was stagnant from the Vandalian invasion of the fifth century and the crescent of the eleventh century. In the third and second centuries AD in the reign of King Masinissa the city entered into a close alliance with Carthage. This civilization extended until the late last century BC, specifically in 46 BC, the date of the Romans coming to the city of Maktris under the banner of Emperor Jules César, who made it a small quasi-republic in the Roman Empire. The city flourished during the first, second, third and even fourth centuries BC, where it became the municipality of the motherland in its area and annexed to it the municipality of Castellans, which is considered by the municipality as a political, economic and social center. The great achievements began one after the other and the city was fortified with walls to protect it and doors with arches. Only the arch of the city door is called the door of the eye. The current arch and the massive entrance to the city and another arch of Emperor Trajan in the city was held in celebration of the Emperor's victory over his enemies in the east in the middle of the second century AD (160-170 AD). The archaeological site was discovered since the early 19th century. The excavations in 1893 began the discovery of the Hator Miskar Temple. In 1960, the excavations were resumed to reveal many features. The archaeological excavations and excavations carried out in the site date back to the pre-Roman era, and certainly to the late Carthaginian era of the Numeid kings, ie, the second and first centuries of Christ. Many of these tombs have been used in the Roman era, or perhaps new tombs have been built. With the reminder that a large part of the site is still incomplete excavations.
