I walked right by the mosque....I didn't actually visit. I heard, as did probably everyone else in the town that p.m., the call to prayer. Since I'm a Christian, I didn't stop what I was doing. Interestingly, neither did anyone else around me!

Hayrettin Paşa Mosque is actually one of the first churches built in Ayvalık. Known as one of the names of the Virgin Mary, the church named Panaya was built in 1850. With the Republic, the church began to be used as a mosque in 1928. The building, which attracts attention with its impressive 7 columns and colorful motifs, fascinates those who see it with its visual aesthetics as well as its historical background. With its blue ceiling color, the building on the side of the church, which stands wide and gives a feeling of spaciousness, used to consist of houses where priests used to stay and a Greek school. Today, one of the buildings continues to function as a school. If you want to visit Hayrettin Paşa Mosque, you can take a discovery tour around the central streets of Ayvalık.
