The city was founded by settlers from Magnesia in Thessaly and Crete. For this reason it was not accepted in the Ionian League. Towards 700 BC it was conquered by Gige, king of Lydia. Towards 626 BC it was destroyed by the incursions of the Cimmerians and rebuilt the following year by Miletus. In 546 BC it passed to the Persians who granted it to Themistocles. In 499 BC participated in the Ionian uprising. Lidia's satraps used it as a second residence. In 459 BC Themistocles himself died there.
