The Great Theatre goes back to a preceding structure of the Hellenistic period (3rd-1st centruy BC). In the Roman period there was an extensive rebuilding under the Emperors Domition (AD 81-96) and Trajan (AD 98-117) with at first a two-, later three-storeyed impressive facade. In addition to theatre performances, assemblies also took place there; in the later Imperial period, gladiatorial contests are also attested. Before the 7th century the Theatre was incorporated into the Byzantine city walls.

Amazing theater at the end of Ephesus visit. The theater nowadays (May 2019) is in restoration works and expected to be ready next year. There are few guards taking care of the monuments and there are many adolescents abd chinese people all over the city and the restoration area. Ephesus was an important centre for early Christianity from the AD 50s. From AD 52–54, the apostle Paul lived in Ephesus, working with the congregation and apparently organizing missionary activity into the hinterlands.

Take at least 3 hours to visit the ancient city of Ephesus. When you have finished the main street of Curets, you will come to this huge antique theater by following the Agora from there to the Celsus Library. A good stopover place. The capacity of this huge theater leaning on the steep mountain slope is 24 thousand people. It is thus the largest open-air theater in the ancient world. Cultural activities, gladiatorial plays were performed at this place. It was also also the meeting place of the Ephesus People's Assembly. Saint Paul preached here.
