This church supports the largest Christian community living in Smyrna. The community is divided into the following types: the "Levantini", that is, predominantly Mediterranean Europeans who settled in Turkey for a few generations but still preserve the original language and culture; staff of the local NATO base and workers in other industries, evidently with strong mobility; occasional tourists (especially in summer) and "tourists of the faith", that is, groups organized for a "Christian" visit to places and even beyond Europe; a noteworthy group of families who for the past 30 years have emigrated here and come from eastern Turkey, Christians who, as we read in the letter of St. Francis Xavier († 1552) the day of his liturgical memory of Christianity «do not they know nothing else but that they are Christians ». It is a matter of recatechising and many times of celebrating Christian initiation. However, these families constitute a more stable group and a fair number of them come from them; neophytes both as individuals and as entire families and this is a consoling new phenomenon, unthinkable a few decades ago; Turkish and Muslim citizens (believers or not God knows) asking for or visiting the church or being able to "see" our prayer. They don't reach a very high number, but someone is there.
