SCAMMERS! I used a credit card to purchase some alcohol that totaled around 383 Turkish Lira (around $67 USD). When I returned to my hotel I received a notification from my bank that I had been charged $163 USD. When I checked my receipt, sure enough it said 963,00 Turkish Lira. When I confronted the two store clerks not ten minutes later (with the receipt) they said they were sorry and refunded me in cash. But as a regular traveler (28 countries and living abroad for the last 10 years) I know a scam when I see one. If a decimal point was off from 383TL that might be different, but 3830 Lira ($671 USD) might set off a red flag or two at some banks. When does 383 become 963? How many times do we never look at our receipts? Or how often do we simply throw them away after a purchase? I’m confident that without a receipt or payment notifications I would have been out a hundred bucks. Save your receipts, turn on bankIng app notifications, and pay with cash when you can. And don’t buy from these crooks.
