This amphitheater was built in the ancient city of Mira in the 2nd century A.D. a certain Lysinus Lanfus. It has a diameter of about 110 meters and accommodated from 8 to 10 thousand people. The amphitheater has 35 rows: 29 lower and 6 upper, separated by a diazome (a semicircular passage between the rows of the ancient theater).nThe amphitheater is called Greco-Roman, because it is semicircular in shape like the Greek ones (in the Roman amphitheatres, the long ranks were made a little taller so that the audience could clearly see the stage), and there is also no division of spectator seats accepted in Roman amphitheaters “for the rich” and ordinary citizens.nThe amphitheater was built for theatrical productions, and during the Roman Empire it was converted into gladiatorial battles. Also here sacrifices, public courts, and executions took place.nThe amphitheater was repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes, but was always quickly restored. In the XII century, it was partially buried, like the ancient World, which turned back under the mudflows due to strong earthquakes of the Miros River.

The Greco-Roman amphitheater in Demre (Peace) Turkey was built in the 2nd century AD, historically connected with Lycia, an ancient country in the south of Asia Minor, which was located on the territory of the modern Turkish provinces of Mugla and Antalya.nIt is well preserved to this day, which compares favorably with many others in Turkey.nUsually his visit is included in complex excursions on the way to other interesting places. Planning a separate trip here hardly makes sense. It also depends a lot on the ability of a guide to tell interesting things about these places.nRarely, but you can get to the performances of creative groups, which take place in the amphitheater today.

A rather well-preserved ancient Greek amphitheater. Restoration and restoration work is underway on the territory, but everything is fenced and marked. If you wish, you can get closer to the Lycian tombs carved into the rocks. Historical background can be found on the Internet.
