The fortress is located right by the road. The fortress is not big and it goes fast. It is being restored and cannot be logged in (2018). The archeological excavations are from 2010. There was an ancient Thracian fortress on the site. The last remains are Byzantine.

Had a sneak peek on the installation projects. Looks like its going to be worth visiting.

Sultan Selim 3rd built this castle to defend the Ottoman empire after the British navy succeeded passing through the Dardanelles Strait on 19 Feb. 1807

Remains of the fortifications of the Bigali fortress (tr. Bigali Kalesi) are visible just off the Gelibolu - Eceabat route, about 6 km from the second of these cities. Construction of the fortress began at the end of the 18th century, during the reign of Sultan Selim III, and ended at the beginning of the 19th century, during the reign of Mahmud II.nnBigali Fortress was established as an artillery post that was to protect the Dardanelles from the threat of the British Navy. At the same time, the fort Nara was built on the Asian shore of the strait.nnFor the construction of the Bigali fortress, materials from the nearby ancient Sestos castle were used. Although not much of that building has survived to our times, it is worth mentioning the mythological tale of the tragic lovers: the priestess of the goddess Aphrodite named Hero of Sestos and Leander of Abydos. Every night Leander swam across the Dardanelles to his beloved Hero, and was led by the light of a window lamp. When the lamp went out one stormy night, Leander drowned, and Hero killed himself by learning about his fate by jumping from the tower. In 1810, Lord Byron recreated Leander's feat by passing the strait from Sestos to Abydos, which took him 4 hours.nnAlthough in 1980 the Turkish Ministry of Culture entered the Bigali fortress on the list of archaeological sites, there are no maintenance or renovation works carried out there and the whole falls into ruin.nnWhen looking for information about Bigali Fortress, it's worth knowing that it has several alternative names: Bogali Kalesi, Bokali Kalessi, Bokali Kalessı and Boğalı Kalesi.
