I was with the US Army in Turkey Nov 1962-May 64 and we had a base on the peninsular on the hill. I think I can still see the imprint of the old base on the map. In addition we had a small Airfield located some distance away on the peninsular too, it was a small dirt runway for the most part and we had three small Army Aircraft [two single engine and one twin engine] that we flew from Ankara to Sinop and back. As far as I know we were the only AC that landed on it. Years later I heard that they flew in larger planes so I expect that the new longer runway was located where the main City Airport is now located, since there is no evidence of it at the old dirt runway. I was not personally stationed in Sinop but I spend a week there in Nov 1962, and a week there in May 1964 processing in and out. I was stationed with the Aviation and Liaison Section in Ankara that supported the base. However I never flew in on Army Aircraft. Both times that I needed to get to Sinop there was bad weather. Both times I rode a army mail truck from Sinop to Samsun or from Samsun to Sinop and flew on Turkish Airlines in F-27s Twin Engine turbo props AC.
