SADIK BAYDERE (03/11/2020)
Mysterious temple and ancient ruins of Gerga, some 10-15 km to the northwest side of the Alabanda ancient city shows traces that the history of the city goes back to Archaic Period where the ruins belong to both Archaic and the Roman Periods. Important settlement reflecting the Carian culture of which the rampart walls are typical Carian style. Stated in the sources that the name of Gerga can be a city and can also be the name of a God. The most important building, still standing intact, has the properties of a temple. Built of large stones of different sizes and shapes used like wood both on its walls and its magnificent roof which is an architectural gem, there is a large carved inscription on a triangle stone in the forehead of the building saying GERGA. This name Gerga or Gergas together with Gergakome could be found carved in large letters on dozens of stones in different parts of Gerga. It is estimated that the huge statue which has fallen to the lower side of the building belonged to Kybele, the sacred Anatolian Mother Goddess, which according to local sources remained standing intact some 30 years ago. Remains of the ruins such as some large flat grooved stones raises doubts that the place could have been used in history since Archaic periods as a sacred worship location where people from neighbouring establishments came time to time to worship gods. As archeologist George Ewart Bean (1903-1977) had said, there is no other fascinating and enchanting place as the remains are so attractive and unusual. Too mysterious, too intriguing to visit ...

Carian village near Ovacik, 12 km S-SE of Çine. It is unknown to history, identifiable by the fact that the name is written on the rocks and buildings more than 20 times. The village center is on the E hill, which carries a remarkable group of monuments. Most conspicuous is a small but well-preserved temple, with a roof constructed in imitation of woodwork; the pediment over the door is inscribed with the name Gergas. Close by are two tapering stelai over 3 m high, again inscribed Gergas, between which stood a colossal statue now overthrown. A little to the W is another statue, 4 m high, lying on its face. Not far away is a group of ruined houses and a street lined with walls.nLower down is a curious sloping rock with flat top, inscribed Gerga Enbolo, which was perhaps a speaker's platform. On the W hill is a third fallen statue, also over life-size, inscribed on the breast with the name Gerga. A number of small square buildings about 2 m high, roofed and open in front, have been thought to be tombs, but are perhaps more probably fountain houses. It is supposed that Gergas is the name of a local deity.

The roads are rough, you can drive up to a certain distance. 3-5 minutes walking distance from vehicles leaving. At first glance, it is called whether we came for a building and a few obelisks, and it is a must-see place that fascinates itself as you examine it.
