Thought the derailleur was going to be replaced. However, the bike mechanic adjusted the front and the rear derailleur and also the cable tension!
The guys are nice and professional.
While I understand the many good reviews on their friendly attitude, I believe the value of a bicycle store does not end with the purchase. Again, I'm sure they treat everyone warmly even after the sale but they fail miserably in anything technical. I have had several experiences where they have failed me and I feel it is to everyone's benefit to know that while they seem to be knowledgeable, that knowledge is really skin deep. Three examples:
Replace because they don't know how to repair - I have been there when they recommend changing an entire shift lever due to one stuck spring (not my bike) because they couldn't understand the internal ratchet mechanism. They made the sale courteously and with smiles hiding the fact that they were not really mechanics but salesmen with tools.
Full service is done half-assed - I have had my bike brought in for a full service only to find out that "full" is really not "full" and at least the disc brake system was neither uninstalled, serviced and reinstalled (as they said all the parts would be) or even looked at. Makes me think that they just cleaned the bike, gave it the once over and called it a day. When I ran out of brake pad on the first ride after the full service, I went back very hot headed. They told me that disc brake systems were not on the list of items on the full service. I nearly flipped. With as little sarcasm as I could maintain, I recommended that they tell anyone coming in for a service that disc brakes are not part of neither the inspection nor the service. I had them order the part and since my bike was dirty from the ride and the part would not arrive for a few days had them wash it as well. I didn't expect a free part or a free clean. Just a little something to take responsibility for failing in their services. They gave me back the bike, told me that in addition to replacing the brake pads and washing the bike, they gave the bike a once over and tightened a few screws. They handed me the bill and allowed me to pay in full. I decided never to go back but didn't really take any action. I figured I'd just dissuade my friends to go but did not want to affect them. In all fairness, they are nice guys.
Incompetence, the final straw - Yesterday I wanted to replace my stem and couldn't remove the top cap bolt. I had to use an Allen key in conjunction with a lever to get the top cap off it was on so tight. The bolt came off with the top cap, internal cinch cap, the internal cinch bolt(used on my bike instead of a star nut) and washer. Removing the assembly caused the expanding bolt to fall into the fork causing a minor inconvenience. Getting the top cap bolt loosen from the cinch bolt was much more troublesome. Anyway, the problem is, I know that the top cap bolt needs only to be finger tight when setting up the fork and stem so I know that I would never tighten it so much so that removing it nearly stripped the top cap bolt socket. I also realized that the steering, which wasn't as loose as before (when walking the bike), was a direct result of someone over tightening the top cap bolt and compressing the bearings over what is necessary, which causes premature wear and tear. This is such a beginner mistake and that's why I'm writing this review. It's not just laziness, it's not just miscommunication, it's not just being cheap, it really is an indicator of not understanding how to service a bike.
I recently found out that some friends went there to purchase the BESV electric bicycles. They raved about the sales people. I have no doubt that they were treated well. I cringed a little knowing that if they ever needed servicing they would be trusting their lives to these people. I'm sure there may be one or two good mechanics at the shop. But can you be sure which ones they are? Would you be willing to put your life on the line?
Five stars for their sales pitch. They are humble, respectful and helpful. But an overall one star review because I can't trust them and would never recommend the store to a friend. To an enemy, though...
Pretty good shop.
Very kind and good service.
Friendly shop
