it's been fairly positive and the staff are quite helpful, when conversing in mandarin

Cool place. They have a little practice area for if you want to practice for your motorcycle test. And they are not too strict about making mistakes on the test. I saw some people make quite dangerous errors, but the friendly staff passed them anyway. ud83dude42

If you want to use your international licence in Taiwan, you can only do so for the first 30 days and then you need to come here and have it validated. It is free to do so but you need to bring your passport and a passport photo (they have a photo machine there, cost is nt140). We didn't have to wait to be served, but the whole process took 30 minutes. The lady who served us at the front desk was lovely. The lady in the back processing our papers could work on her smile.nnSome American States have an agreement with Taiwan and don't need the international licence validated but this info isn't easy to come by so best to just go here anyway and ask to be sure. You don't want to end up in an accident and not be covered by your insurance (or be fined by the Taiwan police for driving without a licence).

Besides AIT charging $50 USD to notarize your US drivers license, I was in and out of this place easy with a new Taiwan drivers license. Check and read thoroughly on their website (the English version) and be very prepared. Don't just show up expecting to get what you want without proper preparation. I find it much easier then to deal with.
