This converted old building, done up in a brutalist modern style, struggles not to collapse under the weight of its own pretentiousness.nnLittle more than a millionaire’s playpen, this private mini-museum purports to “honor” the history of the site, yet does nothing more than exploiting that same rich history as thin veneer to create a sense of purpose and belonging. Artwork is sparse and pretentious, completely unrelated to the site and the museum’s dense and turgid long explanatory texts only add to the sense of feeling excluded from any connection with the experience. An Alien place indeed.nnThis idle temple of pretense is not at all representative of the fire and fury of Kaohsiung ‘s impressive art scene. For the living version of the real KS experience, skip this bunker and head over to the newly developed waterfront to feel the heartbeat of this grand port city.

Great place, recorded with many Taiwanese history during the war century. And the restaurant is amazing too.

Nice renovated building. But very few artworks and all those are of local artists that even licals hardly know. However the entrance ticket price is on par with top European museums, 250NTD/ 9 USD, must be a joke. You may deduct the ticket price on the food in their cafe, but the cheapest set meal is 480 NTD and it is pretty simple food, something that you may but in a food court for 150NT$. The cafe staff is very nice though.

Was pleasantly surprised to see a Turrell piece here. We liked both of the shows that were up when we visited and the food at the café was quite good. We actually went down to Kaohsiung from Taipei specifically to visit this art center and it was worth the trek. Keep in mind, the Turrell piece is on view only certain periods of time throughout the day so plan accordingly.
