The building of the former First Men's Gymnasium. In 1837, the construction of a gymnasium was started on strong foundations and from the material of a dismantled Jesuit church in the center of the Old Town. Nicholas I himself drew attention to the problems of the Kamyanets gymnasium and expressed "the active desire of the government and the whole secular state to see in this provincial city a building that corresponds to the dignity and significance of the provincial gymnasium." Therefore, the laying of the foundations of the gymnasium on June 25, 1837 - the 41st birthday of the king - was furnished very solemnly and took place in the presence of the governor, representatives of various denominations, numerous spectators. On September 8, 1841, the building was consecrated by Archbishop Arseniy. Construction was carried out during the heyday of Russian classicism, although the authors of the project refused to fully use the principles of this architectural style. The main facade is divided horizontally by cornices, belts, sandrikas. Signs of monumentality of the facades are given by high semicircular windows of the second floor, under each of which four balusters are sunk into the thickness of the wall. In the center of the main facade, above the entrance, there is a balcony with an iron lattice, resting on four decorative metal columns-supports, forming a porch. On the ground floor there were common student apartments, on the second floor there were classrooms, and on the third floor there were teachers. In 1851, the assembly hall between the second and third floors was closed and two halls were arranged. In 1872-1873, the Holy Trinity Church was equipped in the upper hall. In 1921 the former gymnasium was reorganized into the first labor school of factory and peasant youth. In 1928-1932, the labor school included Ukrainian, Russian, and Jewish schools. During World War II, the house was badly damaged, leaving only the walls and openings of windows and doors. After reconstruction in 1948, it was transferred to the Pedagogical Institute. In 1968, the building was transferred to the university and now houses the historical and natural science faculties of Kamyanets-Podilsky National University. Ivan Ogienko.
