Almost all burials are destroyed or are in disrepair. Thanks to local activists, the territory, if possible, has been put in order. There are burials of famous people of Zhitomir of that time.
Abandoned place. Ancient atmosphere.
Divided by a fence (to the left of the entrance to the Polish Cemetery) is the old Lutheran (German) cemetery. German settlers began to settle in Zhytomyr in the first half of the XIX century. Zhytomyr was especially attractive to Germans from aristocratic families. Among the members of the German community of Zhytomyr were musicians, bankers, architects, engineers, businessmen, and even the leaders of Zhytomyr (in 1883 - 1886 the mayor was Oscar Ernstovich Trull). It was a small community (about 1% of the city's population), but the most discerning. The Richter family (ancestors of the famous pianist Svyatoslav Richter), Arndtov, Steinov, Enshey, Fersterov, Wilke, Schedel, the doctor Heinrich Nat (the writer Alexander Kuprin lived in his house), the real state adviser Matus Baumgarten are not just surnames. This is part of the intellectual elite of our city. Sviatoslav Richter's grandmother Elizaveta von Reinke, Infantry General Mykola Ottovych Duve, Zhytomyr doctor Heinrich Nutt, a well-known Zhytomyr doctor before the October coup, and Baron Ivan Maximilianovich de Shoduar, a well-known philanthropist and artist, are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery. By the way, the tombstone of General Duve was made by sculptor Hryhoriy Olyshkevych, the author of the monument to Pushkin on the Old Boulevard.
In the 30s of the twentieth century. Tombstones began to disappear from the Lutheran cemetery, most of which later appeared in Smolyan and Vilsky (on Peremohy Street) cemeteries on the graves of party and Soviet officials.
The names of the past "owners" were lost, and new ones were written in their place. In the 1970s, cooperative garages were built right in the cemetery. Today in this cemetery you can see thickets of bushes, fallen gravestones and looted crypts, piles of garbage and garages. The cemetery was removed from the city register.
