The monument was erected in 1968 on the site of the crossing of the Dnieper River by the troops of the 6th Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front in memory of the fallen Soviet soldiers. The opening of the memorial took place on October 14, 1971, the day of the liberation of Zaporozhye. The author of the 14-meter sculpture of the Soldier is the Zaporozhye sculptor Boris Rapoport.
